For The Loss of a Dove

Oh sadness
oh no
struck
and spun
a twisted spiral
a dove's life
a dove's life
undone

God please
take her spirit
quickly please now
free her
that she may
not suffer
oh this poor
beautiful
dove

I close my eyes
I pray
my heart
sends it out
when I open
them
her breathing
yes
her breathing
has stopped

still

there is sadness
at such
a tender bird
lost

by our
busy highways
destruction
that more often
than not

anaesthetizes many
who just carry on
without any feeling
any feeling or thought

for the loss
of beautiful nature
and this beautiful
dove

Later
as I move
further
and further
away
I see a
skeleton
of a bird
that could be
the same

yes, a dove
like the one
that is now
flying
over my head

I worry though
that this one
could be
the companion
of the one
that is dead

oh sadness
oh tragedy
for a bird
that I love
oh sadness
for the loss
for the loss
of the
dove.

Part of a Larger Circle

What if
all our
food allergies
body dis-ease
is really
our mother
earth
speaking
to us
directly
bodily
saying
Save Me
free me
from
monopoly
monoculture
be that food
or otherwise
How I long
to be Free
filled with
Diversity
this is
 what
I need
creativity
not
genetically
engineered
but totally free
to be new
each moment
adapting
growing
creative
flowing
free
in Peace
Set me free
beginning
with
yourself
for you
for me
for
one
for all
for Our Health
and Well-being
Set
Me
Free.
Set
Us
Free
Choose
wisely
what life
you take
into your
body
for it
is part
of a
larger
circle
of life
my life
yours,
Mother
Earth.

Haiku

Victim

small pink feet dangling
suspended how in this tree
oh, poor frozen mouse

Crimson Rising

rippling crimson fire
a ceiling of bubbling clouds
morning sun rising

Snowflake

softly touching down
an art form lost forever
upon a warm tongue

Frost

a broken window
restored by the rising sun
as it melts the frost

Lies

rainbows do tell lies
shining on a spiders web
within morning dew

Lunch

my inner child screams
as the spider closes in
piercing helpless prey

Deer Passing

was it felt or heard
soft vibration of thumping
a tail flashing white

Thunder Cloud

I see you coming
rolling billowing giant
threatening to rain

Spring Snow

piled to the ease troughs
incredible wall of snow
portent of flooding

A Clearing to Relax

wow, no mosquitoes
one small dragonfly, good job
thank you very much!

Walking on Water

walking on water
(ice layer hidden below)
she looked like Jesus

Sex

naturally best
when allowed an unfolding
without controlled thought

Beggar's Ticks

quiet hitchhikers
stick up like so many quills
oh my poor dog's face

Unexpected Apparition

dark shadow rising
exploding apparition
many wings flapping

(photography is all my own)

What will you Weave?

Gaze upon this matter
a floating orb of life
that is at your fingertips
for joy, love or strife

A thought, a word,
a deed  today
can spin the thread
of tomorrow

Think upon
what you weave
love, peace or sorrow.

A Gift of Enchantment

Warm Moist early summer air
enveloping, giving a feeling of pink
as the sun descends
and lowers a blanket
of mist upon
the wild summer
grasses growing
freely
over long
rolling hills
of the parkland
wisely preserved
by our ancestors.
What’s this?
Twinkling lights
within the mist
360 degrees
of enchantment
gently blinking beauty
calling first here
then there
where
a smile
comes
unbidden
to settle
upon
a heart
forever
remembering
this moment
and
grateful
for the
generous
gift.

The above is a recollection of an early summer evening
in which I experienced a field completely covered in fireflies
as I momentarily left the Winnipeg Folk Festival to cycle
and also walk back to my campsite to change and retrieve what I
needed for the evening's festivities. This moment of enchantment
will remain within my memory forever, whereas I do not recall
much of the boisterous activities of a crowd of over 30,000 people.

Hmm... food for thought.

Apology to a Partridge

I’m sorry little partridge
that I startled you
made you lift
your little round body
against the forces
of gravity
using precious energy
not once but twice
on this frosty morning
to escape in flight
peeping over and over
your fear
and though I changed
directions
moved my path wide
from where your
little round shadowed form
landed
my pup came too close
and so once again
you peeped your fear
and flew fast and low
with my genuine concern
over the highway
safely thank goodness.
I wondered at your loneliness
as usually I see at least
two to four of your kind together
but then was reassured
another day
when I did see
a group of at least five
flying freely
together.

Dawn Rising

Shadowed form emerging
in dim light
growing, rising
what a sight
Curiosity,
mind confused
imagination
reality fused
unearthly creature
expanding up and wide
explodes before me
to the left and right
with a whoosh and a ripple
a chorus of wings in flight
my heart beats in rhythm
with their plight
these startled birds
whom I didn’t know
were settled in a bush
that I approached
before the first
light of day
had I known
I’ve would’ve chosen
another way
so within this shelter
they could’ve stayed
upon this cold
winter morning
day.

[Again, on another dawn rising walk…]
Shadowed form emerging
in dim light
growing, rising
what a sight
Curiosity,
mind confused
imagination
reality fused
unearthly creature
rising over me
wings expanding
then I see
it is an Owl
right over my head
so close I wonder
if it will come down
instead
it just checks me out
and continues on its way
not too far though
to land on a pole
and there it stays.

I think this must be
the same one
I did hear
in the distance
three or four times
with no fear
but intrigue
and wonder
as I passed by
under a moonlit
morning sky
with stars
twinkling
and shining bright
trees illuminated
by this light
lending
a surreal feel
yet at the same time
that all was whole
all would heal.
